  • Do social distancing rules apply in the workplace?

Yes, they do and its very important to follow government guidelines and provide the right care for your staff.

Returning back to work and living and working the New Normal is a mixed feeling of relief and apprehension, therefore very important to make visible changes to reassure persons.

What do we need to re-open under COVID-19 guidelines?

First check your business is permitted to re-open. The government have issued a list of business that are not permitted yet, please check this out here, to confirm you are classed as unnecessary - https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/staying-alert-and-safe-social-distancing/staying-alert-and-safe-social-distancing#other-businesses-and-venues

You are able to open? Great News!!

What is the best attitude towards social distancing?

Boris Johnson’s latest moto is Stay Alert, Protect Lives and whilst this has been debated by opposing Politians (which off course they would do), it is great mindset to be in getting your business up and running again and back on track.

You are needed to support other industries out there, so do your bit. Check out this helpful article recently published by the UK Government:

The Latest Staying Alert and Safe (social distancing guidelines) issued by the Government https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/staying-alert-and-safe-social-distancing/staying-alert-and-safe-social-distancing explains what is expected from the public with more detailed requirement set out on this government website.

What is required to meet with Social Distancing?

Staff and Customers must be protected from COVID-19 as business re-open and persons return to work and public areas. You will be under scrutiny from the Public, Government and even you own employees they feel nervous about what they should request of you.

This document states that businesses and self employed persons should have the following changes:

You should think about how you can organise your work area so that you can keep people 2 m apart, where possible:

Government Recommendations: What Everymat has done:
Physically arrange work areas to keep people 2 metre apart; Consider where persons are going to work whether standing or sitting, and arrange desks and work stations with a 2 metre area for each workspace. This should be easier with the reduction of staff actually at the premises.
Mark areas using floor paint or tape to help people keep a 2 metre distance; Black/Yellow Floor Marking Tape can be used on hard floors and some thin pile carpets. This is a temporary, easy to remove, inexpensive product, so would be the best option to try if in doubt. There is also a more heavy duty anti slip tape for a more permanent fix, but this is usually used in warehouses and busy production areas where the cheaper floor does stick down for long enough.

Social Distancing Mats are ideal at reception areas, to remind visitors to stand back from reception, until called forward, and reminds persons to stand at 2m distance when they see the first too persons doing so.

Provide signage to remind people to keep a 2 m distance; Social Distancing Mats are ideal, but make sure the mat is 2m long and has a clear message, otherwise misleading.Floor Stickers are also a good option, but can come loose and don’t adhere to all surfaces. They are also not so noticeable as mats.

Wall signage is a good idea, especially ‘Wash Your Hands’ and ‘Queue Here’ ‘Catch It, Bin It, Wash your Hands, for those sneezes.

Avoid people working face-to-face, for example working side-by-side. If staff are distanced correctly this should not be a problem, apart from some cases, such as reception areas, or where machinery is being used. Clear screens are preferred, but can be expensive. Where it is not necessary to see persons cardboard can be used, which is a very cost effective option and easy to customise.

Which Social Distancing product do I need?

Help with products that may be required can be found on this site: https://www.hse.gov.uk/news/assets/docs/working-safely-guide.pdf

The immediate steps to take are detailed on this guide:

    1. If we do not have hand washing facilities available hand sanitiser should be used.   Hand Pumps are in short supply and become expensive, so we have created hand pump and 5L refills combination packs, to help our customers and reduce the cost of this supply.
    2. Public places and Businesses should also be physically arranging work areas to keep people 2 metre apart; Mark areas using floor paint or floor marking tape to help and remind people keep a 2 metre social distance.   Anti slip is recommended for more Heavy Duty Permanent Use, whereas this Floor Marking Tape is for more temporary use in offices, receptions, schools and shops.
    3. It also states that signage should be provided to remind people to keep a 2 metre distance - Social distancing mats are an idea way to show this message, but please ensure the mat is actually 2 metres, or the message provided can be misleading.
    4. Avoid people working face-to-face, for example working side-by-side - This can be arranged with floor markings where persons are standing to work and arranging office desks in a suitable layout.
    5. Cleaning routines need to be reconsidered with more focus on sanitisation and reduction of germs - We have Uniwipe Clinical Midiwipes in stock which are a great way to deal with this and are also hand safe.

How can Buy Social Distancing Products at reasonable prices?

Our range of Social Distancing MatsBlack Yellow Floor Marking Tape, Social Distancing Tape printed with Keep a Safe Distance of 2m, Black Yellow Barrier Tape, along with a small range of Sanitiser and Sanitising Wipes, should be enough to cover the immediate and essential requirements.

  • What are the best door mats for home?

The most effective mat for home use, is a latex backed cotton mat - WashMeMat

    • Latex backing is very non-slip, so the mat doesn’t move around
    • Cotton is extremely absorbent and collects a lot more moisture than man made fibres
    • They are very light, and can easy to picked up and relocated
    • But the biggest and best benefit it that the go in the washing machine on a Eco Wash at 30 degrees!!!
    • Dry in the open air or on the radiator.

That was an absolute winner with me, so easy to keep clean.

BTW - I also use under my child’s high chair to catch the food, simply pop the mat in the washing machine.

  • Are there mats that can be cut to size at home?

If you would like a bespoke door mat made to size that is useful for wiping feet clean, collecting moisture and stopping dirt coming in, there is a mat that can be purchased and cut to size.

Visit: WashMeMat to view the three colours available.

They can be cut with heavy duty scissors or a Stanley type knife.  Use a board when cutting with a knife, so as not the spoil the floor, or work surface.  A straight to cut against is also recommended, but the mat fibres will also overhang the edge of the mat and hide small mistakes.

  • How does an anti-fatigue mat works? Does it really make you feel comfortable?

Yes, they do make you comfortable…

Many persons might stand on a cold hard floor in the situation there was no floor covering (we all know what it feels like and have maybe never considered that it could be a whole lot better!!)

Cold hard floors leave you with cold feet, achy knees, back pain, and increasing tiredness and here’s why.

Anti fatigue mats and how they work

Anti fatigue matting is usually made of rubber or plastic, which is warmer than concrete and the ground, therefore raising your feet from the cold, and stopping the problems that are caused by cold legs and knee joints. It acts as an insulator between body heat and the floor. This stops the heat from your body going into the floor. Therefore making you feel better and also allowing to use your energy for working and not creating more heat to keep warm.

Rubber and plastic are softer materials, also supportive, making feet comfortable at the same time as supporting your legs and back, therefore reducing knee and back pain. Simply soft substances do not have anti-fatigue properties for persons standing, as they are not supportive enough (imagine standing on a mattress all day!!)

Anti fatigue matting is also proven in statistics to reduce staff absenteeism and to improve output in factories, simply because persons are provided more comfortable working conditions. This is of huge benefit and importance to business owners.

Thinking this sound good, but not sure which mat is best for you?

  • What is the importance of anti fatigue matting?

This is an interesting questions and has many answers. I can give some important benefits of anti fatigue matting...

Many persons would usually stand on a cold hard floor in the situation there was no floor covering (we all know what it feels like and have maybe never considered that it could be a whole lot better!!)

    Situations like;

    • Standing in a work shop fixing something at workbench
    • Packing parcels in the warehouse
    • Walking around and picking goods in a 3PL centre
    • or in the home environment standing on the tiled floor at the kitchen sink

To busy to stop and think, you have cold feet, achy knees, back pain, and feel tired. After all we are getting things done and so it seems to be going good.

But it can be much better…

Anti fatigue matting is usually made of rubber or plastic, which is warmer than concrete and the ground, therefore raising your feet from the cold, and stopping the problems that are caused by cold legs and knee joints. It acts as an insulator between body heat and the floor. Anti fatigue matting is also proven in statistics to reduce staff absenteeism and to improve output in factories, simply because persons are provided more comfortable working conditions. This is of huge benefit and importance to business owners.

It is also an important way to show how you care about others. As a business owner you could really improve the worker comfort by installing anti fatigue matting around the warehouse and operations, even at the sales desk and reception to show how you appreciate your staff.

Housewives hugely benefit from having a suitable mat at the kitchen sink.

Not sure which mat is best for your application?

We have a helpful online chat box, that give immediate feedback on questions.

  • How To Keep Employees & the Public Safe From Slips, Trips and Falls

Slips, trips and falls are the most common cause of workplace injuries in the UK, with an average of six accidents happening every day.

While only some result in fatalities, they still take a toll on employee morale and productivity with about 1.5 million working days lost due to employees taking days off to recover from slips, trips and falls. And such falls, slips and trips are almost always entirely preventable.

What’s more, it costs very little to prevent such accidents from happening.
As an employer, you have a legal responsibility to protect the health and safety of your employees and visitors. That includes carrying out a risk assessment and where necessary taking steps to control slip, trip and fall risks. For example, using doormats to stop rainwater being tracked into your building and making the floor slippery.

Comments from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE)

To conduct a risk assessment, consider what risks in your workplace could lead to slips, trips or falls, recommends the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Then decide what suitable and effective control measures will stop such accidents happening and put those control measures into practice, says the HSE.

“Concentrate on the real risks – those that are most likely to cause harm,” says the HSE. “Think about how accidents could happen and who might be harmed.”

    You can do this by:

    • Asking your employees what they think are hazards in your workplace. After all, they may notice things that you don’t. They might also have suggestions on how you can control such risks.
    • Using the HSE’s Hazard Checklist to identify and fix potential hazards that could otherwise cause slips, trips and falls both inside and outside your premises.
Here are some of the ways the HSE suggests you can prevent slips, trips and falls in and around your premises:
    • Use entrance matting
    • Use anti-slip mats
    • Make sure spills are cleaned up
    • Repair machinery or building leaks
    • Improve tasks to minimise spills
    • Have regular plant and equipment maintenance carried out
    • Ensure that you use cleaning methods that are suitable for the flooring you have
    • Dry smooth floors are cleaning or keep people away from those areas until the floors are dry
    • Establish plans for routine cleaning and dealing with spills
    • Make sure the detergent used to clean floors is mixed at the correct concentration
    • Replace loose, damaged or worn flooring
    • Replace flooring that becomes too slippery when wet
    • Ensure that lighting is sufficient and that steps and slopes are visible
    • Make sure that walkways and work areas are free from obstructions
    • Make sure your employees wear the right footwear particularly if they work in areas that are likely to get wet or slippery.

  • How do I choose the right anti-fatigue mat?

Here at Everymat we are often asked this question, so here is a brief post covering some of the key points.

There are many types of mats that are sold as "anti-fatigue" mats, but our products are specially designed to suit particular purposes.  When choosing a mat, consider the following:

Know the purpose of the mat. Anti-slip or other mats are not always the same as anti-fatigue mats, although some mats will have multiple properties.  Choose a mat that matches your need best, or ask one of our staff which will best suit your situation.

The thickness of the mat. Softer and thicker may not always be better. Choose a mat that provides some elasticity, but at the same time is not so soft that a person feels they cannot stand comfortably.    We do have product samples available to assist with this.

Know the environment the mat will be used in.   Particles on the floor and chemicals being used in the area can affect certain materials.   Please tell our staff about any concerns you have.

Mats should not slip, or create a trip hazard.   It is important to tell us the type of flooring mats will be placed on, so that we can suggest the right backing material.  It is also interesting to note, that heavier, larger mats are much less likely to more around that lighter grade mats in smaller sizes.

Mats should have sloped edges, so they are less of a trip hazard, although the mat edge that is against a wall or work bench works better with a non-sloped edge.   We provide plan drawings for larger projects, making our clients confident the layout will work before the product is purchased.

    • Black matting with yellow hazard border, is preferred, so they highly visible on the floor even from a distance, or for persons that are partially sighted.
    • Mats may need to be cleaned. In some areas, such as food preparation, being able to adequately clean the mats will be important.

Quite a lot to think about?   Don’t let this delay your decision to benefit  - just tell one of friendly team, what you are looking for, and we will come up with some helpful suggestions.

We look forward to assisting you.
